Four pedestrian crossings are set to be installed by the Council at a notoriously dangerous junction on the King’s Road.

The junction at the King’s Road and Beaufort Street has long been a safety concern for walkers. There were 25 casualties from collisions between 2020 and 2024, seven of which resulted in serious injuries. In response to this issue, the Council is proposing to radically improve the pedestrian crossings at the site.

They are now consulting public opinion on the project. An online survey has now opened and will run till 9 November 2025.

According to the Council’s proposal, the existing “staggered pedestrian crossing” on the eastern arm of the junction will be removed. It will be replaced with a straight-across pedestrian crossing. This style of crossing will replicated on all of the other three arms of the crossroads.

In other changes there, the pavement on the eastern side of Beaufort Street will be widened, and the Council plans to make the outside lane coming from the west on the King’s Road only for drivers turning right into Beaufort Street.

There are concerns that the new crossings will worsen what is already a location for a permanent traffic snarl up backing up along the King’s Road.
