Squirrels have been spotted scaling the great heights of the World’s End Estate.

In an astonishing photo taken by one resident and supplied to The Citizen a squirrel is seen happily scrambling past a flat on the 12th floor of Dartrey House.

The adorable little furry creatures (Surely they are “really bloody annoying vermin“? Ed) are often seen climbing up brown cables of the digital content supply network to the estate. They stop off at various balconies along the way for smash and grab raids on windows boxes. Some have even ventured inside flats on the hunt for food when doors are left open. The squirrels also chew through netting that has been put up to stop pigeons getting onto the balconies.

Residents have complained to RBKC, but have been told that squirrels are not regarded as “vermin”, so officers say that there is nothing they can do.

One resident said: ‘I don’t think squirrels are cute at all – they are a menace and can be really aggressive. It gave me quite a fright when I suddenly saw one by my balcony. It was 12 floors up and was climbing upwards without a care in the world. They clearly don’t get vertigo! I can’t even look over my balcony without getting dizzy and my legs going wobbly. Vertigo’s a terrible thing, you know.

‘People might think it’s funny, but there’s a serious side to all this. The squirrels are clawing at and chewing the cables. If they get broke, how much is that going to cost to repair? It will be an absolute fortune.

‘Something has to be done. Maybe the council should look into putting up barriers of some kind by the cables nearer the ground. If the squirrels can’t get past down at the bottom, then it could all get sorted out.’

It’s a bit nuts to bother a busy press office with this, but The Citizen will contact the council for comment…
